Do you have trouble starting a task, getting into a rhythm, and staying in the flow?

Experiment

This habit experiment explores whether listening to specific music before and/or during certain types of tasks helps you get motivated, find a rhythm, and stay in the flow longer.

Do you already use music to be more productive? Perfect! This experiment is for those that don’t. 🙂

  • Create an empty playlist on your favorite music streaming service
  • Name the playlist for a specific task. For example …
    • “Let’s Flow – Writing”
    • “Let’s Flow – Chores”
    • “Let’s Flow – Workout”
    • “Let’s Flow – Reading”
  • Add at least 5 songs to this playlist. The more, the better.
  • Set a “Let’s Flow!” reminder by creating a repeating calendar event or alarm on your phone.
  • Play your custom playlist before and/or during your task at the office or home.
  • Keep your playlist fresh by regularly adding songs and removing the ones that no longer are working for you. 
  • For tasks requiring concentration, consider using our meditation grooves, which incorporate repeating rhythms and harmonies to reduce distractions.

  • Is listening to your custom playlist before the task motivating you?
  • Is listening during the task helping you get into a rhythm?
  • Are you able to stay more focused?
  • Do you notice yourself working for longer periods of time?

Fantastic! Then we suggest creating more playlists for other tasks that require a different “groove.”

Listening to music, no matter the style, may not be working for you. That’s absolutely okay.

However, if you want to experiment with some other options, you can try listening to tracks from the “nature” or “noise” genres. Or, just enjoy the silence. 🙂
